46 Ballots: Gerhart leads Suh; Ingram, McCoy trail

Well, we're now up to 46 ballots that contain 103 votes. It's Gerhart 56.6%, Suh 39.0%, Ingram 27.9%, McCoy 22.2%, Tebow 14.4%.

Astute observers will note that Toby Gerhart is leading, even though we've actually tracked down 20 ballots that list Ndamukong Suh in first place - and only eight with Toby Gerhart at #1.

Why? Two reasons: First, Gerhart gets #2 and #3 votes on twice as many ballots (15) as Suh does (8).

Second, and this is key: A huge percentage of the Suh votes are coming from the Southwest region - specifically, Nebraska. As I mentioned earlier, a large number of the early ballots will come from folks campaigning - and today, that's been all about Suh.

In fact, 49% of all the votes that we've tracked for Suh are in the Southwest. Beyond that, he's also concentrated in the Midwest (23% of his votes) and the South (20% of his votes).

By contrast, Gerhart's picking up votes everywhere. 26% of his support is in the Southwest, 21% in the Midwest, 19% in the Northeast, 17% in the Far West, and 11% in the South.

If this trend holds up - with Gerhart picking up lots of votes geographically spread out, while other candidates are largely regional... well, that's very good news for Toby Gerhart.

One last note: We have, so far, tracked down ZERO votes from the Mid-Atlantic region. As I said, there's a long way to go.

And all those Suh votes at #1 will have other guys picking up points at 2 and 3...Toby likely amongst them.

Regardless of the results Suh deserves to be in NYC on Sat and hopefully this trend keeps up.

I don't get why Suh isn't the leader. Gerhart does have twice as many #2 and #3 votes on ballots, however Suh has 2.5 times as many 1st place ballots. Heck, Suh has about as many 1st place ballots votes as Gerhart has votes. Doesn't make sense stiff arm trophy.

remember though, in 2001, eric crouch won basically with the southwest vote, so there is precedence for winning by crushing in one region.

okay seriously suh is fricken insane, and tim tebow doesnt compare; and this coming from a florida fan. Suh has put up insane numbers all year at the DT position and he handidly beat down Texas and Colt McCoy. If he doesnt win it because he is a defensive player that is bs. He has disrupted plays all year, and was definately the most outstanding player all year which is what the heisman is. Suh is the most outstanding player in 2009

McCoy could surprise. How many Heisman voters filled in their ballots before Saturday night? How many of those voters will admit they voted for McCoy?

then there are the people like john saunders, who said he would wait until mccoy played in the big XII championship before voting for him, saw him play like crap, and then voted for him anyway.

@jason. Not sure if McCoy played like crap. I think he just got pwnt by the Nebraska defense... and Suh 4.45 times.

I think Suh should get it because he is Impossible to defend one-on-one and sometimes with 2-on-1 and you don't see McCoy doing that or Tebow, or even Gerhart doing it either so just give it to him at less give him a chance.

McCoy looked like crap because of Suh and the front line of the Husker. Suh getting doubled by the O-line and still making play. Its not just one game that it comes down to, but Suh has played that way all year long. I don't know about McCoy, but with Suh in his face most of the night he didn't do a thing!
