One Vote: "Smith, Quinn and McFadden are not on my ballot."

James Day, a H------ voter from the Salem (Oregon) Statesman-Journal has this to say:

Here’s my favorite H------ horror story. In 2000 Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke won the award. In the spring of 2001 the NFL draft was held and seven of Weinke’s teammates were drafted ahead of him. That doesn’t mean that the H------ should be awarded on the basis of pro potential only.

However, it does seem kind of bizarre that Weinke won the award in a year in which it seems he was not the best player on his own team, much less college football as a whole.

I e-mailed my ballot to New York on Tuesday and will be listing my top three along with our report on the H------ in Sunday’s Statesman Journal.

Here’s one hint: Smith, Quinn and McFadden are not on my ballot.

Wow.

Good for Mr. James Day. Finally a voter who actually has an opinion and thinks about his vote. While I don't completly agree with his picks (or more specifcally, who he didn't pick) his point is sound. More thought should go into this prestigous award. Simply picking the QB on the top team in the college football devalues the actual value of the trophey. Many of the "also rans" have put up amazing statistics and almost single handly propelled their teams to very successful years. It would be nice if those players actually had a chance to win.

Looks like Mr. Day forgot that the H-----n Trophy is awarded to the most oustanding COLLEGE football player in the country and not to the player with the most pro-potential in college. Just because Weinke was drafted behind a number of his teammates does not mean that those teammates had better a COLLEGE FOOTBALL season than him. NFL Drafts are all about potential, not accomplishments, and should not be factored into the H-----n Trophy. The NFL is totally different than College Football, from players getting paid to offensive schemes. Mr. Day should have his H-----n Voting Rights REVOKED for confusing the TRADITIONS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL with the GREED OF THE NFL.

Good for Mr. Day for being an idiot. I can understand not having Quinn on the list but to omit Smith and McFadden too shows his true football intelligence. It's my guess that he never played a day of organized football in his life. To leave off the best QB and RB, with two of the toughest schedules makes me believe he makes his picks by which uniform/helmet he likes best. My assumption is that he placed Colt Brennen and Ian Johnson as they lite-up the very tough and dominating WAC and Steve Slaton or Mike Hart; both of which are the only other players deserving of a trip to New York to watch Troy Smith take home the award. Let me finish by congratulating Mr. Day on making a mockery of his ballot for the most coveted individual performance trophy in all of sports. Hopefully next year he'll let his wife fill it out.
