252 Ballots: Ingram leads with 44.5%, Gerhart 40.7%, Suh 39.7%

With 252 ballots, 27% of the total, Mark Ingram continues to extend his lead - now up to 3.8%. That's more ballots than we've ever had, though still one of the most narrow margins we've sent yet between the top three candidates.

We'll have another update tonight, based on some email correspondence we've had today. At some point tomorrow, we'll make our final projection.

If you're interested in helping us track down votes, check out the Big List of 600+ Voters. In an attempt to make this easier for you - and avoid the repeated (over and over and over) postings of ballots we already know about, we've bolded the voters we don't know yet. If it's not bolded, we got it.

Some tips:

  • Post every vote you find. If you only post the ones you agree with, the projection will be wrong.
  • Whenever voters identify their vote 1-2-3, post all three. If you only share the #1, the projection will be wrong.
  • Be as specific as you can about the source. If there's a link, post it. If it was on-air, provide the station, the date, and the time. We need to be able to verify what they said (that it was a vote, not a prediction, or a hope), and that they claimed to be a voter. (There are bloggers and others out there who don't have votes, but are happy to confuse you.)

Thanks for all the help. We couldn't do this without you! But please, don't post votes we've already got. That just makes the updates slower. (No, seriously, stop posting about Monte Poole, Spencer Tillman, and Eddie George. We got 'em.)

Matt,
Writers from Tenn. and Miss. did not put Ingram on their ballot. My how blind hatred rears it's ugly head.

Posted by: Frank Barnes | Dec 10, 2009 6:43:49 PM

I feel like I argue in an unbiased fashion, as ive said if Suh was a LSU player or USC, or Texas....he would deserve it IF he had the same stats. Pretty simple and substantial arguement to me.

Posted by: TrueEyes | Dec 10, 2009 6:44:14 PM

Obviously stats alone arent considered in this so im pretty much sure im not the only other one out of, whats it up to 252 now, that think along the same lines.

Posted by: TrueEyes | Dec 10, 2009 6:46:33 PM

IF INGRAM PLAYED FOR NOTRE DAME OR USC OR OHIO STATE AND THEY WERE UNDEFEATED. AND IF HE HAD THE SAME STATS ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WOULD SAY HE IS THE MOST DESERVING PLAYER EVER. THEY ARE ALL JUST JEALOUS OF ALABAMA.

Posted by: KC CRAWFORD | Dec 10, 2009 6:47:12 PM

Het Chad,Gerhart would be third on the depth chart at Alabama.

Posted by: Mike | Dec 10, 2009 6:48:01 PM

Notice how the posts from the Alabama fans are almost sub-verbal. These people need some basic grammar and spelling help.

Toby,

You cannot argue with these guys. The PAC-10 is good at one thing, GIRLS SOFTBALL. They dang sure are not any good at playing defense. Lets talk defense and how it correlates to someone having better rushing stats. I looked up the top PAC-10 teams defensive rankings. They ranged from 40-65 in the nation overall. The top SEC teams led the nation in total defense. Now an average rusher looks good when you run him to death against a team that has a sorry defense, which is every team in the PAC-10. Now in the SEC, with the top defenses. I want to stop here and let everyone in the PAC-10 know that it is not me rating these defenses, it is people like ESPN, and other people in the know. So if you do not like it argue with them. It is harder for SEC backs to rush against these types defenses. If Ingram was anywhere other than Alabama or SEC you guys would be slobbering all over him. Congrats to Gerhart on his award but these awards are not the end all be all. Performing week in and week out against the best defenses in the nation is what makes you great. You people that cannot understand that total yardage on more carries is not more important than yards per carry, or yards after contact which Ingram has over 1,000,or receiving yards, have to have someone else log onto this site for you. You people on the left coast are supposed to be smarter than Southerners, instead you talk like a bunch of window lickers. I hate to tell all of you but Gerhart as good as he is would be third string on Alabamas offense. I will also say that if Ingram was in the PAC-10 you all would not even mention Gerhart unless it was from the Fullback position. And lastly Alabama has not allowed a 100 yard rusher in a game in almost 2 football seasons. I cannot help to wonder how he would do against Alabamas or Floridas defense. Not very good because your PAC-10 offensive lines would not hold up. Stick to girls softball and leave Ingram alone.

Posted by: Sam | Dec 10, 2009 6:50:43 PM

KC crawdad,
and Alabama doesnt get enough unwarranted hype? They were supposed to blow out Utah last year and got taken to the woodshed by that Utah team. Alabama, thanks for giving me something to laugh at.

According to some of you Suh doesn't deserve this award so he will have to settle for the #1 draft pick in April.

But after reading some of these post there might be three or four players from Alabama that go in front of him in the draft.

Posted by: THE BEAR | Dec 10, 2009 6:57:42 PM

Toby says Suh destroyed V Tech.
Suh had 1 solo tackle, 7 assists, 1 tackle for loss of 1 yard, and 1/2 sack for a loss of 1 yard.
Destruction indeed, as well as a loss.

Sam,
there is a bias of how great SEC defenses are....because their offenses are just a bit better then Nebraska's. Not good. Pac-10 and Big 12 play good offense with 3 great defenses (Neb, Tex and Ou)

Posted by: Chad | Dec 10, 2009 6:59:00 PM

I don't understand why people think Mark Ingram is Undeserving? In all honesty, Have you watched him this season? Without him Alabama could have very well lost 3 games...

Posted by: THE BEAR | Dec 10, 2009 7:01:22 PM

Jordan - Ingram managed a miserable 30 yards against Auburn. Ingram was Auburn's (and LB Josh Bynes's) bitch in that game. He tanked in a huge rivalry game and claimed an "injury" and sat out the last and decisive TD drive. Meanwhile, Toby Gerhart exploded in his biggest games.

It is truly a joke if this Ingram wins the H____ Trophy.

Posted by: Sammie Walker | Dec 10, 2009 7:02:25 PM

true eyes,
Before you open the gorge of a mouth, please check the rankings. Nebraska is ranked. Wow. I would guarantee Nebraska defense could hold Alabama to under 10 points. Also, Texas will give Alabama a game. I will bet my paycheck that Tex scores more then 13 points on that impostor Alabama defense.

Posted by: Chad | Dec 10, 2009 7:05:13 PM

Mike,

My beef is not with you or the big 12 or Gerhart for that matte. It is all of these PAC-10 fans who have been spitting hate at Ingram for no other reason than they hate Alabama and the SEC. But since you bring it up the corn huskers have a great defense but there is not anyone on your offense the caliber of Ingram. I am not going to get into a battle of wits with a defenseless man.

Posted by: Sam | Dec 10, 2009 7:05:27 PM

All candidates are deserving, and congrats to whomever wins. To say the Heisman is a joke if McCoy/Ingram/Suh wins shows a true lack of respect. Supporting your favorite player is one thing, but please try to show some class.

Why don't you project missing votes for partial ballots (e.g., when only the 1st place is reported by a voter, why not project the second and third place votes)? Wouldn't that improve the accuracy of the projections and make them a tad more likely to render the correct finish to a close vote like the one this year?

Ingram may be the 2nd best back in the SEC but it would be to Trent Richardson. Richardson is only a freshman so he's not as far along but there won't be a dropoff when Ingram goes pro. BTW, Ingram has a better YPC average than Gerhart also, by .6 yards per carry against opponents who give up less YPC than Stanford's opponents.

Chad,

I did not say anything bad about the BIG 12, and you know that I did not. Maybe this is the reason why you all think your Conference is the best, you do not get it. I said the PAC 10 defenses ranked between 40-65 defenses in the country. I did not rank them. This is off ESPN and Rivals sites. Research it yourself. As far as Tennessee goes, they played us a good ballgame. I did not realize that your team, whoever that may be, blew all of their opponents out. Just try winning all of your games next year. You know that is what makes going undefeated special, you will have some close calls along the way. What is funny is that near loss was not a loss at all. Does the PAC-10 have a near loss column? A love debating with people like you. It was Tennessees kickers fault they lost not ours that we won. I wonder how we have been 2 regular seasons 12-0 without any good players. If we can do that, then what does that really say about the PAC-10 and their talent? Maybe next year you can dress some of your softball players out during football season.

The bear,
Suh is a D tackle. He started out with a double team in which Tyrod Taylor rolled right, Suh then broke the double team and chased where Tyrod outran him (dual threat QB should do) to the right. Suh chased and didnt get there in time before pass was released.
against McCoy Nebraskas kicker kicked it out of bounds which gave Tex a start at the 40 yard line. McCoy threw it to Shippley (idk may have heard of him and sorry Suh could be out in coverage covering Shippley and the inside route and a horse collar for another 15 yards. If you look on the pass Suh was actually in the backfield in McCoy's face on that play

Posted by: Chad | Dec 10, 2009 7:28:37 PM

Trent will be a beast, the problem with beasts is they end up just like Bo Jackson. Your juking all over the place and eventually one part of your body is stuck in someones hands like concrete and your out for the season. I love Trent Richardson but that does worry me about him for the 2010 season.

Posted by: TrueEyes | Dec 10, 2009 7:30:03 PM

true eyes,
there you go again. Youre right, Texas wanted Suh in the Heisman race so they let him but up a great preformance. Wow.

Posted by: Chad | Dec 10, 2009 7:30:29 PM

Why are we even arguing this. You have to realize that ther are how many regions in the Heisman voting? 6? This means that more than just voters in the South have to be voting for Ingram.

Aside that, Chances are that these people voting have credentials that far outweigh ours.. They are sportswriters, commentators, formers, and highly influential to the game.

Quit crying and accept the fact that SOMEONE is going to win, and it might not be who you THINK should win.. As i said, You think it's garbage but some of the biggest names in sports think you're wrong...

Ingram is going to win..

Posted by: Mel | Dec 10, 2009 7:32:51 PM

Not gonna lie guys, I think Montario Hardesty is the best running back in the SEC. Jonathen frickin' Crompton is his QB. But if Ingram wins it, I will understand. Ingram is a great player. He deserves it, just like the other 4 guys. They all bring something *special* to their teams.......... If I had a ballot:

1.Suh
2.Moore
3.Toby

the fact that bama has "so many great running backs" is really more of a testament to nick saban's emphasis on OL recruiting and OL scheming. maybe bama's OL would make me look like a good running back too, ooh.

Stanford's OL is decent, but only Toby really makes it happen. as far as speed goes, the guy can hold his own in the secondary either trucking fools or running through defensive backs--no need to run a 4.2 there. but he's fast, which helps people miss tackles.

Suh is good too, but he's not Toby good.

All the people saying "well if Suh was on Alabama" got me thinking how ridiculous Alabama's defense would be with him. They'd have to play him at right defensive end, but he'd dominate at that position in the 3-4. It's still primarily an interior position in most of the multiples. Likely the best defense of all-time. Heck, if Arkansas' offensive line was adept in knee cap destruction then just keeping Hightower would have likely improved our pass rush even more than it already has this season over 2008.

It just cracks me up how all the Bama fans are spouting off. Compare Suh's stats to Cody's and its no contest. I would argue that Anthony Dixon is the best RB in the SEC west, not Ingram. Season stats are similar with Ingram slightly ahead, but with a better offensive line. Dixon and Ingram happen to share five common SEC opponents -- Ole Miss, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, and Auburn. In those five games Dixon has rushed for 759 yards to Ingram's 537 and outgained him on a per carry basis 5.71 to 5.11.

And, oh by the way, Ingram is also averaging fewer yards per game than 11 other backs, and five of those 11 backs average more yards per carry than Ingram does.

The fact is head to head, Dixon was the better back.
